As I focus on buying less and maximizing my wardrobe, I’m rediscovering how to style pieces I already own. Recently, I picked up a black and white striped button-up to replace a worn-out favorite. While I love the new shirt, it took me a few attempts to find the perfect styling. Here are some ideas to inspire your own outfits!
The Shirt
I bought the Relaxed Button Down Shirt from Ann Taylor, and I’m obsessed. The stripes are just the right width—not too thin or thick—and the muted white color is perfect. It has a relaxed fit that’s casual without being oversized. Currently, it’s on discount, making it a great buy.
A popular alternative is a Madewell shirt, featuring a brown-black stripe. It’s a hit among influencers and even comes in plus sizes.
Styling Suggestions
1. A Brown Cardigan and Flats
Pairing the striped button-up with light-colored jeans is a classic, but adding a few elements can elevate the look.
- Cardigan: The Ba&Sh Gaspard Cardigan is a fantastic choice. It acts as a soft jacket, perfect for both office and WFH settings. I love the black enamel buttons that complement the black-brown pairing. If you’re looking for something more budget-friendly, check out H&M’s similar option and consider swapping out the buttons for a fresh touch.
- Shoes: I opted for a pair of Mary Jane flats from Madewell, which are stylish and comfortable. If you need more support, consider Vionic’s Alameda flats for the same sleek look.
2. A Ribbed Tank and Cargo Pants
Don’t forget that a button-up can also serve as a stylish topper for a tank!
- Tank: I have a great ribbed tank from Amazon. It’s thick, racerback style, and the ribbing adds texture. I sized up for a relaxed fit, and I love it so much I got it in black, too. For a lower cut, try this scoop neck option, or check out Old Navy for plus sizes.
- Pants: For a casual pant that’s not leggings, I recommend cargo joggers. I have a pair from Athleta, but Old Navy offers a nice alternative. BR Factory also has a great selection in various colors.
