Elevate your workspace with a stunning DIY mousepad! This project combines the luxurious feel of suede with the elegance of gold leaf, resulting in a beautiful accessory you’d never guess was handmade.

I know what you’re thinking—gold leaf is the ultimate crafting material, and I’m here for it! It adds a touch of glam to any DIY, and I’m not stopping anytime soon!

Recently, I realized my old mousepad was looking tired and uninspired. It still worked fine, but visually? Not so much.

So, it was time for a little DIY magic!

If you have an outdated mousepad that could use a refresh, or just want to create something cute and functional, this is the perfect project for you.

Creative Uses for Gold Leaf

Gold leaf is one of my favorite craft materials because it instantly elevates any project. Here are some other fun ways to incorporate it:

  • DIY Gold Leaf Splatter Print
  • Gold Leaf Tissue Box Holder
  • Tropical Leaf Art
  • Gold Leaf Brushed Clipboards

Supplies You’ll Need

  • An old mousepad (or a new one!)
  • Enough suede (or leather/faux leather) to cover the mousepad
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Freezer paper
  • Hole punch
  • Iron
  • Gold leaf kit
  • Two craft paintbrushes
  • Spray adhesive

How to Make Your DIY Mousepad

  1. Trace and Cut: Start by tracing your mousepad onto the back of the suede and cut it out. Set aside.
  2. Prepare Freezer Paper: Punch holes in your freezer paper and cut small squares around each hole. Position them on the front side of your suede and iron them shiny side down to secure.
  3. Add Gold Leaf: Using a paintbrush, apply the adhesive from your gold leaf kit (or Mod Podge) inside each hole. While it’s wet, place a small patch of gold leaf over the adhesive and gently pat it down with a dry paintbrush.
  4. Let It Dry: Allow the adhesive to dry for about 30 minutes, then carefully remove the freezer paper, ensuring the edges of your polka dots remain intact. Let the glue dry overnight and dust off any excess gold leaf to protect your mouse.
  5. Attach to Mousepad: Finally, cover the back of the suede with spray adhesive and attach it to your old mousepad, aligning the edges carefully before pressing down firmly.

Perfect for Your Workspace

What a transformation! This chic DIY mousepad is a fabulous upgrade using materials you likely already have on hand. It’s ideal for a home office, workspace, or even a dorm room for a stylish college student.

Have fun creating your beautiful new mousepad!
