Hello, fellow book lovers and crafters! I’m super excited to kick off our August series on U Create, where creativity meets literature. This month, I’ll be sharing free printables, craft tutorials, book club ideas, and more! Today, I’m thrilled to present a fun and budget-friendly project: DIY Book Bricks.
I’m transforming ordinary bricks (just 70 cents each at your local home improvement store!) into colorful, charming book decorations that are perfect for any garden or home décor. These DIY brick books make excellent bookends, add a literary flair to your outdoor space, and even serve as thoughtful, personalized gifts.
The hardest part? Choosing my favorite book! My kids picked out their favorites too.
Supplies Needed:
- Bricks
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrushes (various sizes)
- Painter’s tape (optional for straight page lines)
- Sharpie
- Clear sealer (especially for outdoor displays)
Instructions:
- Clean Your Bricks: Rinse them off with water and scrub if necessary.
- Paint the Brick: Choose your favorite paint color and cover the spine, front, and back of the brick.
- Add the Pages: Paint the sides of the brick to resemble pages. Once dry, use a Sharpie or paint to draw thin lines to create the look of pages.
- Get Creative: After the spine dries, find an image of your chosen book online and try to replicate it as closely as possible. Use a pencil to sketch out the letters or design before painting.
- Seal Your Work: If you plan to display your book bricks outdoors, apply a couple of coats of clear sealant, allowing them to dry completely between applications.
- Display Your Creations!
Now you have charming book bricks to enhance your space or gift to fellow book enthusiasts! Enjoy the creative process and let your imagination run wild!
