As I peruse fall 2024 fashion trends, I can’t help but view them with skepticism. Much seems recycled, from monochromatic outfits to the return of skinny jeans. Yet one trend stands out: crew socks paired with all types of shoes, even heels. It strikes me as odd, perhaps intentionally so, as each generation asserts its identity through style.

Recently, I spotted a tall woman in a coffee shop confidently rocking tiny black leather shorts, a striped sweater, and sneakers with crew socks. She exuded chicness that her similarly dressed friends lacked, thanks to her attention to fit and accessories, like a supple camel leather tote. This encounter sent me down memory lane, reminiscing about my own youthful style choices.

Now, as I look toward my fall wardrobe, I’m focused on practical shoes rather than shorts or socks. I’m eyeing several pairs: Cougar Luxmotion sneakers for their comfort, Sezane loafers for their unique color, Camper Pix Chelsea boots for their versatility, and Maguire biker boots for a touch of chic. While I ordered the Pix boots, I might revisit the bikers if they go on sale—though styled with shorts, they risk becoming closet trophies.

In the realm of clothing, shoes truly are the transformative element. Iris Apfel’s wisdom resonates: with good shoes, you can carry off almost any look. And while leather shorts may not be on my agenda, I can’t help but think how perfectly they’d pair with those Chelsea boots!
